What is Metaverse?

Did you know SMOG? the foggy situation is mostly in polluted cities. The SMOG is a combination of two words SMOKE + FOG. Why I am suddenly talking about SMOG, Actually same goes for Metaverse
Metaverse is a combination of two worlds, Meta and Universe, which literally means Universe of Meta’s. Also Web3 and Metaverse are Different do not get confused.
If you are a developer then it might be easy to understand but even if you are not No worries just read till the end and I am quite sure you will understand the Metaverse.
With the metaverse, there are some new building blocks(technologies) in place, like the ability to host hundreds of people in a single instance of a server (ideally future versions of a metaverse will be able to handle thousands or even millions of people at once), or motion-tracking tools that can distinguish where a person is looking or where their hands are. These new technologies can be very exciting and feel futuristic.
The term Metaverse was taken from a fiction novel written by “Neal Stephenson” in 1992. He combined the two words Meta and Universe to create The metaverse.

“The term metaverse was coined in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, where humans, as avatars, interact with each other and software agents, in a three-dimensional virtual space that uses the metaphor of the real world. Stephenson used the term to describe a virtual reality-based successor to the internet”

Hope you understand that Metaverse is just a name given to the change which is going to happen in the area of Gaming, Virtual Reality, and Technology. Metaverse has been chosen as the word to represent and collectively recognize this change.

What are avatars? And NFT’s?

Did you hear about NFT’s? I guess you did, even if you didn’t. it is a Non-fungible Tokens, meaning a replica, precisely a unique replica of Art on the digital platform. so these Images or replicas represent their unique character and have special meaning. Like in the game of Freefire you have characters, you can assume avatars or NFT’s as characters of Metaverse or Meta Universe.

What is the vision of Metaverse?

The tech companies like Facebook (aka Meta) and Microsoft are working in the field of Metaverse.both companies are competing with each other. Also, Facebook renamed itself by Meta(parent org). According to leading chip-maker Intel, building Metaverse — at scale and accessible by billions of humans in real time — will require a 1,000-times increase in computational efficiency from what we have today. I am quoting some articles from Facebook keynotes from Connect-21

Facebook has said it will spend more than $10 billion to build out its vision for Metaverse. Facebook has also announced to hire 10,000 people to help the social network build the Metaverse. According to the company, the next computing platform has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities.

“The Metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world,” according to Meta.

Meta has also announced new tools to help people build for the Metaverse, including Presence Platform, which will enable new mixed reality experiences on Quest 2, and a $150-million investment in immersive learning to train the next generation of creators.

Meta, in a blog and in Connect 2021 Mark Zuckerberg himself, said, and I am quoting,
“Today at Connect 2021, Mark Zuckerberg laid out our vision of the metaverse as the successor to the mobile internet — a set of interconnected digital spaces that lets you do things you can’t do in the physical world. Importantly, it’ll be characterized by the social presence, the feeling that you’re right there with another person, no matter where in the world you happen to be. In keeping with that vision, he also announced a new brand for our company, Meta, to better reflect our focus moving forward. This is an exciting new chapter for the company, and we’re excited to help bring the metaverse to life.”

Facebook/Meta also announced its Metaverse project named Horizon Home in connect 2021.

Criticism

Currently, Metaverse became a trend but there is a lot of Criticism too.
Information privacy is an area of concern because the companies involved will likely collect users’ personal information through wearable devices and user interactions. Facebook is planning on persisting targeted advertising within the metaverse, raising further worries related to the spread of misinformation and loss of personal privacy.

User addiction and problematic social media use are other concerns. Internet addiction disorder, social media, and video game addiction can have mental and physical repercussions over a prolonged period of time, such as depression, anxiety, and obesity. Experts are also concerned that the metaverse could be used as an ‘escape’ from reality in a similar fashion to existing internet technologies.

The metaverse may magnify the social impacts of online echo chambers and digitally alienating spaces. Since metaverse developments may be made to algorithmically tailor virtual worlds based on each person’s beliefs, the metaverse may further distort users’ perceptions of reality with biased content to maintain or increase engagement.
